Contributed post. If you're building a patio for your property, then good for you. These spaces are great if you want somewhere quiet to sit on a sunny evening while you read a book, or you need an extra room on your property to entertain guests. Unfortunately, though, many homeowners are making various patio mistakes. They're getting the wrong idea about how to use the space and make it work for them. In this article, we list some of the most common mistakes so you can know what they are and hopefully avoid them. Improper drainage and site preparation One of the most common mistakes we see is improper drainage and site preparation. Patios change how water flows around your home, so they need drains for water management. They also need to be close to an adequate slope or grading that allows water flow away from the patio and the property. If you don't do this, then it can lead to puddles, erosion of the patio materials themselves, and damage to foundations. Therefore, plan your landscape grading early and use catch basins to carry water away from your home. Rushing the design There is also a plethora of homeowners who rush the design for their patio. Instead of taking their time to consider zoning and where everything is going to go, they often add elements piecemeal and don't really think about how the patio might have a cohesive design overall. The fix to this is to start with a proper plan that considers everything from multi-zone use to traffic paths. Once you have a plan in place, it can become easier to work towards it and achieve your lifestyle goals. Choosing materials that don't last Another mistake that people often make is choosing materials that last. Opting for fake or faux options that fade or crack in harsh weather is a recipe for disaster. Ultimately, you'll be disappointed with your choices. Because of this, we recommend prioritising durable or timeless materials that are going to work no matter what theme or design you choose for your home. Quality pavers and natural stones are obviously the top choices for 2026. Many buyers now favour materials that feel authentic and representative of their properties. Not creating an attractive transition Sometimes people also install patios without creating an attractive transition between the interior and exterior of their property. Everything feels cobbled together, unprofessionally. That's where window screens can be helpful. These make the process of getting from inside of a property to outside feel more natural and bring everything together. Poor placement and sizing Finally, some patios fail because of poor placement and sizing. Most owners build them too small or in the wrong spot. For example, they might have no shade during peak sun hours, or they could block access to another part of the home. Placement for convenience often overlooks things like privacy and views when seated. The way to fix this problem is to size patios generously; most owners go too small. It's also helpful to zone various patio areas so that the insulation is more functional and actually useful for everyday lifestyle.
