Baby wipes are on a short list of things that every baby absolutely needs (no, not every baby NEEDS a bouncer, you know!). Whether you're using wet wash cloths or a big brand name of disposable wipes, you've got to wipe baby's bottom off with something or you're asking for all kinds of trouble! Out of convenience, most people go with some sort of disposable wipe. You probably did. But, do you know what is in baby wipes?? Often parabens, lanolin, alcohol, perfume, phthalates, benzoates, triclosan... (see my post on why these are baddies).

Here's a great video on it (no one ever mentioned the option of water and cotton balls to me... that sounds pretty great for a newborn actually)!!

So, you can understand why I was so super psyched when I came across these 100% natural baby wipes by WaterWipes.

Yep, you read that right - 100% natural!! Ingredients are: 99.9% water and 0.1% fruit extract. WHAAAAAT!!?? Hallelujah, that is freaking fantastic!!

I have to say that my husband was confused when I brought them home. "If they're just water, what's the point?? Can't you just use a wet towel?" to which I said "Sure, of course you can, and some people do. But I'm not a cloth diaperer and other than the occasional blowout on clothes I do not want to be dealing with all of that washing of pee and poop! I want something easy that I can just throw away, but that is safe and gentle on my baby." I could see the light bulb go off in his head. Got it!

I was surprised that the WaterWipes really have no smell. I was expecting to smell that bit of grapefruit seed extract, but nope. They really do seem like they're just water! They were nice and moist, but not too much so, and strong (they only tore in one direction - with the grain - but it takes a good pull so it shouldn't rip accidentally), and were easy to keep a grip of (weird to mention grip, but a brand I recently tried and shall not name is impossible to keep a hold of!! it's the WORST when wiping a poopy butt, ughhhhhhh).

So, let's recap why WaterWipes are so awesome:
1) They're a 100% natural baby wipe
2) They're great to prevent diaper rash as they'll do the clean up without leaving any chemicals or fragrances behind on on your babies, ummm, behind :P
3) They're especially helpful if your baby suffers from allergies or eczema
4) You can stop buying separate "pacifier wipes"
5) I'm pretty confident using these would not result in THIS (warning, photos not for the faint of heart!!)

I also tried the facial wipes by WaterWipes, which were equally awesome. They're fragrance-free, alcohol-free and consist only of water, sea salt, and grapefruit seed extract. They were true to their promise in that they didn't dry out my skin or sting (and I even wiped over my uber sensitive eye and eyelid area!). These will become a staple in the diaper bag and travel bag - I can picture using them many times on our flight to Japan this fall!!

Did you know sunblock, even the most natural and organic kind, is not recommended until after a baby is at least 6 months old? Even then, you have to worry about what is in it, and it's a HUGE pain in the butt to get it evenly spread on a child, not to mention how often you're supposed to reapply! UGH!! What if I told you there's a much easier solution? Well, there is...

COVER UP! More specifically, cover up with UPF clothing!

We got the 18-24 months size swim romper in a cute whale design and noticed a few changes from our old suit. The other design had a couple snaps at the neck whereas this one does not. Also, Coolibar has changed the types of snaps the use based on customer feedback (don't you love companies that actually LISTEN to us!??). The new snaps, shown in my photo above, are plastic and very easy and quick. There are a bazillion of them, unfortunately, but this is probably a good thing!

I love letting my baby run around half naked, touching his buttery smooth skin and blowing raspberries on his tummy! But when outside in the burning hot skin, I prefer to have him covered up head to toe! That's why I'm so in love with Coolibar's swim rompers! Now, I'm not a fashionista or one to try to style everything up all matchy matchy and fabulous looking. Partly because I'm bad at it, partly because I'm lazy, and partly because I'm cheap. But that said, my son's stroller is BORING!!! Snoooooooooze! It's all black, and being a New Yorker I should be cool with that. And I was. From ruffles to roses, how gorgeous are these!! They even have ties so they won't blow away. They also make fabulous photo backdrops...

My son is chock full of hugs and kisses but has NEVER been a hand holder. Even when he was taking his first steps and learning to walk, he was totally independent. Now at 16 months, forget it! They say pick your battles, so I enforce holding hands when we cross the road, but everywhere else I just let him on his own, try to stay within lunging distance, and pray he doesn't dart off into the road before I can catch him. It's really scary and rightfully so has brought me to consider the controversial baby leash...

I took to google and found many different styles to choose from. There are cutesy ones with a stuffed animal on the back and a tail as a leash. There are ones that are disguised as a back pack, and I believe you can actually detach the leash part and use it just as a backpack when they're older. And there are really simple ones that really do look like a full on dog leash. But none of these really sung out to me.

I guess it takes some getting used to. He was not a fan the first time he used it and still isn't (we haven't had it long). But in situations where I cannot just let him be free, for example when I've got my hands full pushing the stroller with tons of groceries that would take me a moment to brake and put everything down in order to run after him, The BusyBee definitely comes in handy. 

Unfortunately it doesn't keep him from stopping to investigate EVERY SINGLE THING along the way!! Nor should it, I suppose. It's a toddlers job to be curious and explore their surroundings. And it's our job to keep them safe. So I'm all for getting a leash or harness or whatever you want to call it if you have a child who likes to run off unexpectedly. Don't let others make you feel ashamed or silly for using one and in doign so, keeping your child safe!! Shame on those judgy judgy busybodies!!

For parents of little ones, a good night's sleep can be hard to come by. Without a doubt, you'll be up around the clock the first few weeks (or months), that is for sure, but after that it seems like the luck of the draw if you'll have a good sleeper on your hands or become a mombie for the next few years. But maybe it's not completely luck...

Die hard sleep training enthusiasts have many a theories that they swear by - it is such a hot topic in the parenting world!! Cry It Out vs. No Cry Sleep Solution vs. blah blah blah blah - OMG, seriously, what to do?? I've done plenty of research and attempted a few different methods myself (you can read about my experience with Babywise, Sleep Sense / CIO, and finally banishing baby to a partitioned off area of the living room!). My takeaway? Keep to a schedule, don't let baby get overtired, make a routine including cues so baby knows sleep time is coming, and eliminate sleep props that baby cannot initiate or recover himself (i.e. nursing to sleep or letting him fall asleep sucking on a pacifier that he cannot find in the middle of the night to plop back in his mouth is a no-no whereas a sound machine and a sleep sack would be OK).

Since we've had such a long drawn out drama with sleep in our house, when I came across the Bitta Kidda Sleeper at a baby expo recently I was really intrigued. What is Bitta Kidda, you ask?

Bitta Kidda is basically pajamas with a built in lovey. Putting a security blanket or lovey in the crib with a baby isn't completely safe (suffocation / SIDS), and you also run the risk of him chucking it out of the crib (as mine did) or not being able to find it in the middle of the night when he wakes up and needs to self sooth - cue screaming baby who needs your help to fall back asleep! The idea of the Bitta Kidda is that the lovey is always within reach so the baby can hold the piece of blanket for comfort and fall back asleep without your help. Sounds amazing right!?

The Bitta Kidda Sleeper is sold in two colors (yellow and green) in sizes 6 months through 3 years, but obviously the younger you can start the more effective it'll be as it becomes part of their sleep and soothing ritual. They recommend you have 2 (so you have a spare during laundry time) and that baby wears it every night and every nap time.

I'm a big proponent of babywearing and always looking for the next up and coming products for mom and baby. So this one is right up my alley! I give you: The Cub Co-Z Convertible Carrier by Lil' Cub Hub.

It's a diaper bag. It's a baby carrier. It's a mom-invented product (because, let's face it, all the good ones are!). Sounds too good to be true, right? WRONG! It's good, very very good!!

Here's the Cub Co-Z as a diaper bag - it's not big and cumbersome, yet you can fit all of the essentials such as diapers, wipes (check out my mini-wipes pack from Mommy Nearest hiding in there!), keys, hand sanitizer, small wallet, yada yada yada. Here's me and my not so little guy demonstrating the hip carry in our Cub Co-Z. It was actually the first time I had ever successfully worn a sling style carrier!! I always thought it would hurt my neck or shoulder or make me off balance, but actually, it was fine (but I wouldn't want to carry him in it all day long, let's be honest here)! The baby's weight, in this case 25 pounds!!, is dispersed evenly throughout the shoulder and upper arm.

You might ask, what is the point of a convertible bag/carrier? To that I would answer this: what do you do with your carrier when you are out and about but your child is not actually in the carrier? Maybe you let it hang from your waist, looking and feeling a bit silly. Maybe shove it into your already jam packed stroller basket. Or maybe you just kinda lug it around. But wouldn't it be nice to just be able to quickly tuck in the sling, zip it up, and wear it like a cute bag (and not have to worry about a second bag to deal with at the same time)?? HELL YEAH!!

Also, it's super convenient when you're making a quick trip where you just need baby and the essentials - to play group, run an errand etc. It's great being able to throw my wallet and keys and a few extra things in the bag, put Kenzo in the sling, and run over to the park for a couple of hours without having to bother with the stroller and big diaper bag.

For me, budget was a huge limitation. I saw the $1,000 systems out there but just could not even consider them.
