Shorter version originally posted on Mommy Nearest. Unless you're a hardcore attachment parenting kinda parent, you need a stroller for your baby or toddler. Any will do, right? WRONG!! Here is a list I've come up with to keep in mind while stroller shopping (and test driving – yes, it’s very necessary!!). There's no one stroller that will come in first in each and every one of these categories, so figure out what is most important to you and go from there! 1) Price: Sometimes price means quality, other times not. You can find an umbrella stroller for all of $10 or a luxury big-brand travel system for well over $1,000! Don't think you need to break the bank or take out a loan to have a fabulous stroller!
2) Weight: The travel systems with car seat and all can get really heavy. Like, difficult to turn a corner and really tough to get up a flight of stairs (definitely test drive for this function!). If you have a car that you’ll be in and out of, this might be worth it, but probably not something to consider if you are sans car. 3) Height: If the handles are too tall or short for you, it will quickly become annoying and possibly painful. Short handles are especially prevalent in the umbrella strollers. 4) Width: Check that your feet don’t bang into the frame or tires when walking, it should go without saying that this would be really annoying. If you're a city mom such as myself, you may want to take measurements at your go-to shops and make sure the stroller will fit through the aisles and check-out lanes. In some countries, you should verify the stroller will fit through the subway gates, but in NYC this is pretty much never going to happen. 5) Carrying Capacity: How much can the basket under the stroller carry, and what is its accessibility like when the seat is sat up and reclined. 6) Max incline and recline: If it doesn’t recline to 180 degrees or close to it, it won’t be suitable for a newborn (even if it does, you're advised to incorporate a body support pillow). And if it doesn’t sit up fairly vertical, your older child (10+ months) might be annoyed and constantly straining against the harness to get a better view of the world. 7) Maneuverability: Can you easily maneuver it with 1 hand (i.e. when holding umbrella or phone or coffee)? 8) Ease of Open/Close: Doable with 1 hand (i.e. while holding your baby)? 9) Tip-ability: Technically you’re not supposed to hang anything from the handles, but everyone does. Throw your bag on the back and give a good tug down and back on the handles to make sure it’s not easily tipped over (warning: do this when baby is NOT in the stroller). 10) Convertibility: Does the seat switch from forward to rear-facing? Will it easily convert from a single to a double stroller? Does it allow for a car seat or bassinet to snap in? 11) Accessories – Check prices of that brand’s accessories and if off-brand ones will work for: rain/bug/sun shield, tray, cup holder (for child or stroller-pusher), stroller lining, winter bunting, rumble board/seat, etc. 12) Size / Structure when folded: Will it fit in the trunk of your car? Will it hang on the inside of your closet door at home? Does it stand on its own when folded or do you have to lie it down? 13) Canopy: Is it large (i.e. covering most of the child when opened) and can you move it depending on sun’s angle? Does it have a peek-a-boo sun roof and ventilation? 14) Cleaning – Does fabric remove for easy cleaning? Will the color stain and look dingy quickly? Black may be boring but there is a reason it's so darn popular. You may consider a black stroller and accessorize it with more exciting colors. 15) Style - You'll be pushing around this stroller for years, so make sure it meets your needs on what you find to be the most important for you in the above 14 categories, but also that you feel good (physically and emotionally) pushing your little one around in it around. If you are a brand-whore (sorry, it's a term isn't it? haha) but budget is low, maybe you should consider buying second hand... there are worse things ya know! Just be careful, there is a whole nother list of things to watch out for in used strollers!! Please do your research!!

Before my inbox is flooded with messages of CONGRATULATIONS let me stop you right there - I am NOT preggo!! No no no, not yet anyway... but I am always on the hunt for great new products for families that I can share with my readers, so I am pleased to tell you about a cool app I recently came across called BabyQ, a free iPhone app designed to help you be the healthiest you can be throughout your pregnancy and beyond. Once you download the app, you start by creating your profile and answering a slew of questions, which takes a minute or two, but is key in letting the app understand your current health and lifestyle. Don't try to trick it - the app won't judge you if you aren't exercising and live off of fries and bon bons! Then it gives you a score, or your "BabyQ", and will start giving you a weekly message with tips and suggestions on how to raise your score and be healthier for you and your little bun in the oven. I love that these suggestions short and simple, and not an overwhelming list of 200+ things I need to do to be the perfection of health. Here's the message I got for this week: You'll also get daily messages with helpful tips for issues you might be encountering at your stage in pregnancy, info about various vitamins, relaxation techniques, etc. You should update your score every week or so (by answering 20 quick questions), and hopefully it'll increase gradually as you start adopting some of the healthier changes the app has been suggesting. Founded by Dr. Mark Gostine and Dr. Gareth Forde, BabyQ focuses on the LENS system: Lifestyle, Exercise, Nutrition, and Stress Management. It's based on analysis of more than 39,000 pregnancies and uses recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Institute of Medicine (IOC) and thousands of articles from the most current scientific literature. So what do you think, mamas and mamas-to-be? I think this app is a great and easy way for pregnant women to focus on their health, and frankly, anyone can benefit from it!! What are you waiting for? Download it today!! Sponsored Post Disclosure: Opinions are my own and not swayed by compensation of any kind. This was a sponsored post, but I limit such posts to companies that meet my moral standards and I feel I can really stand behind (hey, I'm not a sell out!).
OK, I'm just gonna skip the chit chat and get straight to the review because this company NüRoo is totally awesome and I have so much to tell you about the two two amazing products they're contributing to my New Mom Necessities Giveaway!! First off we have the NüRoo Pocket which is a revolutionary babywearing device (see above left photo) - basically a shirt and carrier in one!! I'm so bummed I didn't know about the NüRoo Pocket when my 14-monther was an infant. It looks so comfy for mom and baby and is such a practical way to get in that much needed skin-to-skin time! I definitely have to get my hands on one of these before baby #2 comes along! Here's how it works (from NüRoo's website): I did get to try out the NüRoo Nursing Scarf which is also incredibly unique. Big time kudos to NüRoo for coming out with such new and different products! The NüRoo Nursing Scarf is a big, very soft, super stretchy piece of fabric with a row of snaps on both ends. There are many different ways you can wear it as a scarf as well as a nursing cover, and they have a how-to video for moms like me who are completely clueless! They also have images on the packaging as well as on their website showing you different ideas for wearing the NüRoo Nursing Scarf. Here is what I came up with before looking at their ideas: This one is pretty basic - snap the two ends together and fold it inside itself a few times. Cute and warm! Here's my duck-face selfie modeling my NüRoo Nursing Scarf look great for many situations such as the following:
And here's my suggestion for this one, and we've all been there... "Oh crap!! I forgot nursing pads and totally leaked through my top!! Thank god my NüRoo Nursing Scarf can cover up my milk stains!!" I tried to take a selfie of the nursing cover in action as a, well, nursing cover. But Kenzo had a different plan... this is the best I could do! haha!! Great as a nursing cover, as an accessory, and as a blanket for your little one (see above), or yourself for that matter - I would totally use it on a chilly airplane or on the subway in the summer (you know, when you're in a tank top stuck on a super-AC'd train)! A 90% polyester 10% spandex blend, the NüRoo Nursing Scarf is breathable, machine washable, dryer safe, wrinkle free, and really really soft. NüRoo will be giving their NüRoo Pocket to the grand prize winner of my New Mom Necessities Giveaway (who will also receive 14 other great products for new moms, a jackpot valuing over $600!!), and a NüRoo Nursing Scarf will go to one runner-up! So, what are you waiting for?? The giveaway ends Feburary 19 at midnight so... As a brand spanking new mother, I was a mess. An absolute mess. No sleep, check. Uncomfortable to stand, sit, walk, sneeze, you name it, thanks to my 50 hour labor and having pushed an 8 pound bouncing baby boy out of my hoo-hah, CHECK! And to top it all off, I was using reusable nursing pads (that I'd received as a gift) and they were a freaking joke. A JOKE!! My mammaries must have thought they were trying to feed an entire village, and these nursing pads lasted all of 5 minutes before they were soaked through. And you know what? I thought this was normal. I thought this is the humiliating kind of thing breastfeeding moms have to deal with. I'll just have to stock up on a bunch of flowy black tops that won't show my milk stains quite so bad. I remember standing over my newborn baby at the changing table, as milk was literally dripping out of my soaked shirt, bra, and pads. Yuck. yuck. yuckkkkkkk... I don't remember who enlightened me that there were other brands and types of breast pads out there. Even disposable ones! The second I bought a box at my local Rite Aid and stuffed a pair in my bra it was like a whole new world! Hoorah!!! No looking back now!! Going through this inspired me to come up with Miny Moe, which sells variety packs of multiple brands of diapers and nursing pads. Also a huge inspiration was going through the equally terrible situation with my newborn son's diapers not containing his, how do I put this gently, digested breastmilk? The problem I saw was that you can't buy an individual pair of nursing pads out there, not disposables or washables. And really, that's all it would take to figure out if you like the brand. Just a single pair! So, that's what Miny Moe gives you! Our Basic Mama Disposable Nursing Pad Sampler gives you a pair each from 3 top brands of disposable breast pads: Lansinoh, Johnson's, and Nuk. Our Green Mama Nursing Pad Sampler gives you a pair each of 3 top brands of washable breast pads: Bamboobies, Itzy Ritzy, and Philips Avent. And finally, our Mega Mama's Nursing Pad Sampler gives you a pair each from all 6 of those brands, both washable and disposable. Miny Moe Diaper Samplers were born from the same problem: you can't just go to the store and get a few disposable diapers to try out. Oh no, you have to commit to a big ol' box of at least 50 diapers, but if you're trying to be economic you're looking at more like 150 diapers. I thought I was being smart by putting newborn diapers on my baby registry and stocking up before my munchkin even arrived! But nope, the brand I had randomly chosen did NOT fit my little guy's tooshie. We went through a couple more brands and failures before finding one we liked. With Miny Moe around, no parents should have to go through this kind of frustration! Miny Moe's Diaper Samplers come in a variety of packs including the top name brands (Huggies, Pampers, Luvs), generic store brands (Target Up & Up, Walmart Parent's Choice), and environmentally-friendly brands (The Honest Company, Seventh Generation, Earth's Best, Naty). Order a Miny Moe Diaper or Nursing Pad Sampler today, or enter to win the Mega Mama Nursing Pad Sampler (as well as 14 other awesome products in a $600 value jackpot!!) in the... New Mom Necessities Giveaway running through February 19!! ENTER TO WIN HERE!! Disclaimer: Miny Moe is not affiliated in any way with the brands included in their samplers. Miny Moe merely include the brands they have found to be the most loved by moms, so you can try them all at once and find which one YOU love the most!
Stressful? Yes. Wonderful and memorable and lots of fun? YES! Our Winter ONEderland triple first birthday party went off without a hitch, well, for the most part! As I mentioned in my previous post, Gymboree only gives you 15 minutes of set-up time. So it was a challenge to say the least but we had about 10 adults to get it done - a few were on babysitting duty and the rest were unpacking and climbing ladders and taping and arranging like mad! But we totally pulled it off, phew! Check out our party room spread (vender credits at bottom of post): After setting up, it was time to PLAY! We had just over 15 babies/kids in attendance and it was a zoo, but made me realize there was NO way we could have done it at one of our teeny tiny Brooklyn homes. Despite the minimal setup time allotted, it was really nice to have it at a play gym where the kids could go wild and we didn't have to worry about them breaking our stuff! The parachute and bubble session at the end of the party was definitely my fave - the kids were loving it, and I was loving that ^_^ The party room was a bit tight when it came time to chow, but we managed! Oh my, could we look any more disheveled? haha! But how cute are our little ones sitting in their big kid chairs ready to (let their mama's) blow out the candle! Here is our amazing cake, nothing short of a piece of art! Made with love by Theresa of Grandma's Heavenly Goodies in Bay Ridge. The gorgeous masterpiece before, and the hideous butchered aftermath! LOL! We had to get a group shot at the end, and were able to corral most of the babies. These mama's (Bay Ridge Baby Mamas) have been in our lives since Kenzo was about 3 months old, it's so cool to watch them all grow and start to become more interactive and play together! I know some will move out of the nabe, booooo, but it'll be cool to see who stays and which kids remain friends into their elementary school days and beyond!! Can you imagine if Kenzo ends up marrying one of these little ladies in 25 or 30 years!?!?! Cleanup was a bear, but it actually went really quickly! But look at the amount of presents!! Wooooohooooooooooo!! We have some awesome friends!! Well, those are for 3 babies, but still! We ended up having to take a taxi home because we couldn't carry everything! Still haven't gotten around to opening up anything yet, will do it this weekend so daddy can enjoy seeing Kenzo's excitement! Good think we're moving to a bigger place in a couple of months! Turns out a toddler needs bigger (and more) toys... So how'd we do it? Who did we use and recommend?? Here's my list: Save the Date, Invites, & Welcome sign courtesy of beccagoldrubin DESIGN Cake courtesy of Grandma's Heavenly Goodies Birthday Suit & Hat courtesy of Little Stitchin Lu Birthday Banner courtesy of Paper Heart Company Snowflake Pom Poms courtesy of The Shower Planner White snowflake cupcake wrappers courtesy of Crafty Grandma 17316 Mini blue snowflake cupcake wrappers and drink stirrers (which I used for the fruit shish kebabs) courtesy of Dill Pickle Picnic Glitter felt snowflakes and snowflake table confetti courtesy of Pear Creek Cottage Everything else we got from Party City! A BIG BIG BIG kudos goes out to my fellow party planning moms - they worked so hard, created some awesome food / art, and helped me get through this monumental event without too much emotional trauma! Thank you Rose & Shira - I love you girls!!! ^_^ Whoopsie - guess I took an unplanned 2 week hiatus from the blog, sorry about that but as they say, Life Happens!! The biggest thing that happened was that my baby turned ONE YEAR OLD!!! Wahhhhhhh!! Actually, no tears were involved surprisingly! Nostalgia, yes, looking through newborn photos and videos - GAH! But he's growing up and it's very exciting - he's 21 pounds, loves playing hide and seek, is eating table food with his 8 teeth, is running around and playing soccer (he even has itty bitty calf muscles LOL), and is also getting quite the attitude (advice on handling tantrums is MUCHO appreciated!!). I also went home to North Carolina from December 13 - 24, so I was on vacation mode and lazy as hell. Who can blame me?? I've wearing a ton of different hats now working for Miny Moe and Mommy Nearest and Romio and Kidz Central Station, not to mention running after my little toddler, planning his first birthday party, managing several Facebook pages and of course this blog. Phew!! I'm exhausted just thinking about it!! There are just not enough hours in the day, and not enough dollars in my pay checks HA!
We're also on the fence about going into contract on a co-op (if you're not from NYC, a co-op is basically a condo but instead of owning the unit, you own shares to the building instead, and your monthly maintenance includes your portion of the entire building's property tax and mortgage - really strange, definitely a NYC thing!). We bid and counter-bidded 3 times before they finally accepted our offer. But when the contract came in there were a few things that made us balk including a 10% increase on the monthly maintenance and financial reports that look like there is a pretty constant assessment being charged. It's such a huge decision, we just don't know what to do!! It's definitely on the high end of what we can afford, and we don't want to stress about making ends meet. I think we're going to have to sit down and finally make a decision today >_< Home buying in NYC is a freaking joke, a cruel and punishing joke! OK, so that's what's been going on here! Hopefully I'll get back into the swing of things with more regular posts here! Also planning an awesome group giveaway for to-be and new moms coming up! If you have a suggestion for a great company I should reach out to for this, please let me know! Or if you're a blogger who'd like to help out on this one doing reviews and promoting on social media accounts, please get in touch! I'm not sure when the cake smash photo session became a thing, but it's here and I LOVE it!! If you're on Pinterest and you have a little one, you know what I'm talking about. Sure sure, giving your one year old a cupcake at their birthday party and letting them get messy with it has always been a blast. But now we're talking about setting up a special photo shoot with an adorable outfit and encouraging them to just go nuts. I have been looking forward to this for months now!! Of course there is some planning to do, but here are some tips to help you out! THE CAKE SMASH OUTFIT: First, we needed the outfit. Naturally off to Etsy I went and found an awesome shop, Stitch to my Lu. She's got great onesies and "birthday suits" which is what I found completely irresistible!! She has a bazillion different designs and patterns to choose from. DEFINITELY check her out!! I went with the turquoise, red, grey, and black chevron set which included the hat, tie, and diaper cover (you can see it in photos below) - how cute is it!?!? Man, I want Kenzo to wear it every day! Thankfully, the cake and icing washed out of it easily so he's totally getting another wearing out of it on his actual birthday (Christmas day) and at his party in January! ^_^ Like Leslie of Stitch to my Lu on Facebook and tell her I sent ya! THE CAKE SMASH PHOTOGRAPHER: Next up, we had to find a photographer within our penny-pinching budget. This wasn't easy, but we found a local dad with great rates and an in-home studio (he's in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn - just a 30 minute walk from our home in Bay Ridge, though it was snowing, yuck, LOL). If you're in the area or anywhere in NYC actually, check out Austin Personalized Photography. Through January 2014, he's offering my readers a 1-hour 1-backdrop mini-shoot for $75 (this is a 50% discount!!) aaannnnnd you get all the digitals on a CD! Did I mention how awesome he is??? You can do cake smash, holiday photos, head shots, whatever you like! If you're so inclined, please follow him on Facebook, pinterest, and instagram! THE CAKE SMASH CAKE: Finally, I had to figure out the cake... A lot of moms, myself included, are very health conscious, especially when it comes to what their babies eat. I researched on google and pinterest to find a healthy cake without added sugar and also egg-less, since my little guy hasn't had eggs yet and can you imagine if he has an allergy and went into anaphalaxis in the middle of the photo shoot?! geez!! I found a great recipe for cake and icing here. The cake was just flour, bananas, unsweetened applesauce, cinnamon, a wee bit of oil, vanilla, and baking soda! Nothing to feel guilty about at all (actually my hubby loved it and has requested I make it again...SOON)!! The icing called for just cream cheese and applejuice concentrate, but I was worried about being able to make that myself without a mixer. So, I resorted to the sugarless store bought icing and felt very bad about it, especially when I read the back that said excessive consumption can have a laxative effect! AGH!!! I also added food coloring, because hello, I had to get the icing to match birthday boy's outfit!! Ahhhhhh mom of the year. But alas, it's a one time thing, how much harm can a bit of icing do eh? Thankfully he took all of one lick of the icing and decided it wasn't for him. He didn't even try my wonderfully healthy cake! >_< LOL! Kids!! My little guy was just not really into the cake, and this was not ideal for a smash cake photo session! So we resorted to 2 cheats... 1 was putting some puffs in the icing, on the side away from the camera. This got him to start picking at the cake. He got a little messy but nothing major so next I had to get in there and start breaking up the cake myself and handing it to him. The result is it looks like he did it all himself. Cheating, yes. Cute, YES!! He did finally get in there and start throwing it around, as you can see from the video! THE CAKE SMASH INSPIRATION BOARD: I spent some time on Pinterest collecting ideas of poses and backdrops and outfits and cakes I liked. Check out my inspiration board here! And now, without further ado... THE CAKE SMASH RESULTS!!!! Here are some collages I put together with my favorite photos: As you can see, it was a real mess, which is exactly what I wanted!!! But that leads us to...
THE CAKE SMASH CLEANUP: Cake + icing + baby = big time MESS!!! Our photographer used a backdrop made of photo paper that he could just fold into itself and throw away. This was a GOOD choice on his part!! Keep in mind your little one will not stay in one place. He'll crawl or walk or run around, with icing all over himself! So someone will have to be in charge of picking him up repeatedly and putting him back in the right spot. This person will likely get icing all over themselves as well, so make sure they're not your best clothes, and should not be working a camera! I highly recommend bringing a video camera to catch the antics (see above video - priceless)! As for cleaning up afterwards, if you do the shoot at home it's easy, just throw them in the bath after wiping off the big clumps. But if you're at a studio, I recommend LOTS of wet paper towels (or wipes) and some clothes you don't care much about to get them home in. That said, surprisingly the icing (food dye and all) came out of everything it came in contact with for us. Phew! Also lucky was that baby had no rash or reaction, despite being sticky for at least an hour before we got home (yeah, we stopped to pick up some Turkish kebab on the way home haha!). So, you're dying to do a cake smash now right!?!?! Reply below with questions or comments!!! I've said it before and I'll say it again - a humidifier is really a must in the winter for anyone, but especially a baby! Why, you ask? I'll tell ya why... Winter is dry. Your heaters make it even dryer. When your nasal passages dry out, they become easy targets for all the germs you encounter out there. Beyond that, you might notice dry skin, chapped lips, stuffy nose, nose bleeds, and static electricity galore. To battle this, you should keep your home at about 45% humidity. You can try this with pots of water and wet towels lying about your house, or you can go the higher tech route with a humidifier. Cool mist humidifiers are recommended with kids around, to avoid the risk of burns from boiling warm mist ones. They're also more effective at relieving congestion and breathing difficulties of colds (you know, the ~12 your child will have each year!!) and croup. Relieving congestion is most important for babies who must be able to breathe through their noses in order to feed from the breast or bottle! We just got the Crane Germ Defense Humidifier, which works with cool or warm mist - awesome! The Germ Defense part comes from antimicrobial protection in the water tank that creates a germ free mist. One tank can run up to 72 hours, but I make sure to change the water every 24 hours, after running it through the night and 2 naps. The thing I love most about this humidifier is the two vents you can move independent of each other!! We have the humidifier in our bedroom, which we share with our baby, so we aim one vent at his crib and one vent at our bed. Perfecto!! It's also really quiet! While it is "germ defense" it will still breed mold if you let it, so they recommend soaking the base in a vinegar-water solution once a week. The only negative is that the power light is bright blue... I guess you can just tape something over it? :P You can get one of these humidifiers from Crane's website (or just about any retailer including Amazon), OR... Enter to win a Crane Drop Humidifier or Adorable Humidifier (as well as 8 other awesome products - $300+ value) in my Great Winter Baby & Toddler Gear Giveaway (ending December 4!) **Disclaimer: Although I did receive this product free of charge, I was not compensated in any other way to do this product review. Babies are supposed to have buttery smooth skin right? That's why we have the saying "smooth as a baby's bottom"!! But let's face it, sometimes they're not silky smooth. Maybe they're dry from the harsh winter climate, or maybe they have eczema or other skin-related issues. You can't just run to Rite Aid and slap any old lotion on your little one! Do you know what kind of chemicals and phthalates and what not are in those?! There are plenty of healthier and greener options to choose from, and I have one really cool one to let you know about. On the Spot by Sweet Knee is a no-mess balm that contains only FOUR ingredients! None of that "how do you say that!?!?" scary stuff! You've got your unrefined raw shea butter, virgin coconut oil, beeswax, and rosemary antioxidant - that's it! And all are certified organic and naturally gluten free. WOW! Because of the simple and natural ingredients, you can put it anywhere - baby's ashy legs, chapped cheeks or lips, drool-irritated chest... And it comes in a really great roll-up stick form (like a giant tube of chapstick) that is easy for adults, fun for older kids to use themselves, and perfect for use while out and about. I gotta say, it does the job, feels nice, and smells pretty good too :) You can buy On the Spot or you can...
Enter to win On the Spot (along with 8 other great prizes in a $300+ value jackpot) in my Great Winter Baby & Toddler Gear Giveaway, ending December 4. On the Spot is sold by The Eczema Company, an online Canadian retailer selling natural products for children and adults with eczema. However most of their products are great for non-eczema sufferers as well! Their Scratch Me Not mittens are perfect for babies and are houdini-proof! They have tons of great lotions, green laundry solutions, healing hazelwood jewelry, you name it! We got their Calendulis Cream for my son's cheek which used to get red and irritated (mild eczema??) and it would heal right up after just one application!! That stuff is magical! **Disclaimer: Although I did receive this product free of charge, I was not compensated in any other way to do this product review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and completely unbiased. My little baby boy is 11 months old today. And it has hit me. He's almost a year old! He has 6 teeth (#7 and 8 are about to pop through), he's walking (practically running) around the house all by himself, he's talking up a storm (though has no words yet per se), is starting to graduate from baby food to table food... Somehow, without my realizing it, my baby turned into a toddler!! How does this happen so soon!? I'm starting to understand how, "accidents" aside, the pull toward the whole "2 under 2" thing ^_^ But that would mean getting preggo in less than 4 months! o_O whoa whoa whoa...
