Contributed post. Owning a home comes with an absolutely endless list of jobs, and most people have at least one repair they've been meaning to sort out for months… the trouble is that some repairs have a habit of getting more expensive the longer they're left alone - what starts as a relatively simple fix can easily turn into something much bigger, and often much more frustrating. With that in mind, here are a few home repairs that are usually worth dealing with sooner rather than later. Ceiling Water Stains Most people notice a water stain and basically just hope it won't get any bigger and then try to ignore it, but the reality is that stains don't usually appear for no reason, and they’re not going to go away for no reason either. That means that by the time they're visible, water has usually been finding its way into places it shouldn't for quite a while already. There are all kinds of reasons, like a slipped roof tile, damaged flashing, a leaking pipe, or something else entirely, but leaving it until the stain doubles in size isn’t exactly going to make the repair easier. Unfortunately, water can damage insulation, plaster, timber, and decoration, and what could have been a pretty easy fix sometimes turns into a much bigger project because it wasn't investigated early enough. Overflowing Gutters It's easy to ignore gutters because most people don't spend much time looking at them (why would you?), but blocked or damaged gutters can cause plenty of big problems. That’s because when water starts overflowing rather than flowing away properly, it can run down exterior walls, damage brickwork, create damp issues, and even affect foundations. The good news is that cleaning or repairing gutters is often a quick job compared to dealing with the damage that persistent water can cause if it's left unchecked for months or years. A Noisy Boiler A boiler won’t usually stop working without warning, and more often than not, you’ll spot some little signs that something isn't quite right, like it's taking longer to heat the house, making unusual noises, or perhaps the pressure is a problem, and so on. The thing is, heating systems tend to pick the worst possible time to fail completely, which is why it's definitely worth getting unusual issues checked before winter arrives. In some cases, a qualified HVAC company can spot a small problem before it gets really big and your boiler totally breaks down altogether. Cracked Sealant Cracked sealant is the kind of repair that looks incredibly minor, which is probably why so many people put it off - after all, it's only a bit of cracked sealant. But the fact is that bathrooms deal with a huge amount of moisture every day, and once water starts getting behind tiles, around a bath, or into surrounding walls, it can lead to mould, damaged plasterboard, and repairs that are way more expensive than replacing a line of sealant. Doors And Windows Don’t Close A sticking door or window might seem like just a bit of an annoyance, especially in older properties (where you pretty much expect it), but sudden changes can sometimes point towards larger issues (and that’s a good rule of thumb to work by no matter what it is). In some cases it's just what might be called seasonal movement because of changing temperatures, but in others, it could be linked to excess moisture or movement within the property itself. Either way, it's worth looking into rather than assuming it'll sort itself out because that’s just not going to happen, to put it bluntly.
