What To Expect During An Emergency Dentist Visit - US Japan Fam

When a sudden toothache strikes in the middle of the night or a chipped tooth threatens to ruin your weekend, panic can set in quickly. Dental emergencies tend to occur suddenly and can cause stabbing pain, swelling, bleeding, or fear of what comes next.

In such nerve-rattling times, being prepared for an emergency dentist visit can go a long way. Knowing what to expect can help you relax, take away some of the fear, and help you feel more in control.

Urgent dental visits are meant to treat immediate issues promptly so as to relieve the pain and to avoid complications. In contrast to a maintenance checkup, these visits emphasize immediate treatment and quick fixes.

From the moment you step into the clinic to the time you leave with a treatment plan, every step is carefully structured to prioritize your comfort and oral health. Here is what typically happens during an emergency dental visit.

1. Immediate Pain Assessment

The first and foremost priority in an emergency dental visit is the evaluation of your pain. This is why the distance to a nearby dental clinic is an important factor in ensuring that you get prompt attention.

For example, if you are located in Exeter and are in need of urgent dental care, you can get immediate attention from an emergency dentist Exeter. This is why being close to a nearby dental clinic can ensure that your pain is relieved in time, and there is no risk of the situation becoming worse as you wait for the treatment.

As soon as you arrive at the dental clinic, the dentist will ask you to evaluate your pain by indicating its intensity, location, and duration, as well as whether there is any relief from the pain. This will enable the dentist to understand the severity of your situation.

In most cases, some form of relief will be provided to you before any other treatment is done.

2. Review of Symptoms and Medical History

After your immediate discomfort is alleviated, the dentist will review your symptoms and medical history. This is a crucial step, as your overall health is a significant factor in determining the best and safest treatment option.

You will be asked a series of questions regarding any allergies you may have, the medications you are currently taking, your medical history, or any recent surgeries you may have undergone. Some medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart conditions, or pregnancy, may influence the treatment options and the medications used.

The dentist will also ask you a few questions regarding your current dental condition. These questions may include how long you have had the condition, whether you have experienced any trauma, whether there has been any swelling or fever, and whether the pain is constant or intermittent.

3. Oral Examination of Affected Area

After the dentist has reviewed your symptoms and history, they will examine your mouth.

This consists of visually inspecting the affected area and the surrounding teeth and gums for signs of infection, damage, or trauma. The dentist may also gently tap your teeth to check for sensitivity or use dental instruments to closely examine them for cracks, decay, or gum disease.

In most emergencies, dental X-rays are used to provide a clearer picture of your mouth's condition. Dental X-rays can reveal hidden signs of abscesses, bone loss, the location of impacted teeth, or fractures that cannot be detected through an oral examination.

4. Diagnosis of Problem

After completing the examination and reviewing any X-rays, the dentist will determine the root cause of your dental emergency. A clear diagnosis is vital for developing an effective treatment plan option. Common emergency dental diagnoses include severe tooth decay, dental abscesses, cracked or fractured teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost fillings or crowns, and gum infections.

The dentist will explain what is happening inside your mouth in simple, understandable terms. They may show you X-rays or use diagrams to help you visualize the problem. This explanation enables you to understand why you are experiencing pain and what could happen if the issue is left untreated.

5. Discussion of Treatment Options

After the doctor is aware of what is wrong with you, they will discuss the available options for your treatment.

Emergency cases are first aimed at relieving the pain and stabilizing the situation. However, some cases may need further work at the emergency visit or the next visit to the doctor’s office. The doctor may choose to use any of the following options to treat your condition.

For instance, a root canal to drain the infection, a dental crown to reshape the tooth that has broken, removal of the decayed tooth that is badly decayed, drainage of the abscess that is causing the pain, or replacement of the missing filling.

The dentist will not only discuss the advantages and risks associated with each option but also the period required for healing, as well as the costs involved. At some points, temporary solutions may be provided to help manage the situation before the actual solution is provided at a later date.

Wrapping Up

The unexpected nature of the dental emergency may make you feel like you are out of control. However, learning about the things that happen during a dental visit may help you calm down when you are feeling stressed.

The first thing to be addressed is pain relief; next, it is finding the cause of the pain; and finally, it is coming up with a plan to help you recover.

In every stage of the process, from the assessment of the pain to the discussion of the method of treatment to be used, your health and comfort are of primary concern. The entire process is for your health and comfort.
