Contributed post. Winter is coming! Don’t panic though, we have the perfect guide for you and your home. If you are unsure of how to look after your home then you are about to find out. You may have read plenty of guides and feel very confused about everything. The best thing you can do is take it back to basics and think of what your home needs to survive winter. Keep It Warm One of the first things you need to do is ensure your heating is working. There are a few ways you can look after your heating system, one way is to get it serviced before the height of winter. If you think about it this way: you haven’t worked for a year and are then expected to work the hardest you have ever worked. This is why it is extremely common for boilers and water systems to break down annually when you press that heating button. Speak to your local heating and ac engineers to see if there is anything they can do for you. Invest In Carpet You may have hardwood flooring throughout your home and dread each and every winter. This can make your home feel incredibly cold, even if you place rugs throughout. The best thing you can do, if you have the budget for it, is install carpets. Thick carpets are so much warmer and you will certainly notice a difference when you walk through the doors. Head to your local flooring showroom to find the carpet you like the look and feel of. Remember, it also has to feel nice under your toes. Clean The Guttering This is something that a lot of households forget to do, but it is vital to avoid flooding and damage to your foundations. Get up to your gutters and clear them of leaves and other debris. If you have blocked gutters then the rainwater and melted ice has nowhere to go when it tries to leave your home. This can lead to the water leaking into your home through the drainpipe. If you aren’t able to get up there then your local handyman should be able to do this for you. Install Insulation Finally, have you thought about whether your home has insulation? If it doesn’t then you may be missing out on valuable warmth during the winter months. Older homes don’t usually have this so you will need to check before you fork out for it. You can usually find out if your home is insulated by heading up to your loft, it is the warm fluffy stuff that can be seen on the walls. Don’t worry if your home doesn’t have this, you can contact a specialist insulation company who can come and give you a quote. If this is too much for you, then you can also do it yourself. So there you have it, with winter just around the corner we hope this gives you some ideas on how you can look after your home. Winter can hit incredibly hard so you need to be as prepared as possible.
