Earlier this year I signed my daughter, Penny, who is 4.5 years old for an online piano class. Now, I wasn’t sure how she would do as it was her first online instructional class, but I was optimistic as she loved already “creating music”, aka banging on our keyboard while singing either a song she knew or making up her own song. Sound familiar? I know it’s not just her…
We took a month long class with Natalia Huang Piano Studio, and first off, let me tell you that I was amazed at how considerate and flexible they were with us; we had several things happen during that time and needed to switch the one-on-one lesson several times and each time we were met with patience and understanding! (Thank you Alison! Teacher and Program Director.) Secondly, they worked at her pace: In the one-on-one class they were able to bring my daughter back to focus when she went off-topic asking a question or telling them about some random event/fact, and in the group class, being the youngest, they were able to include and encourage her.
They played rhythm games, and Penny learned not just memory tips and tricks for her fingers and finger placement, but exercises to get her little hand and still-developing fingers to be able to reach the keys better. She learned things like the 3 things that make up music, how to use music to inspire her while drawing or writing, and of course the basics of the types of instruments, and treble clef, bass, etc., and even getting into how a piano works and breaking it apart…
Penny loved her class and can’t wait to continue, we just had several things to take care of and plenty of distractions with her new baby sister and all… But we can’t wait to sign her back up again soon! And if you’re looking to get your child into a piano class, email them and tell them you read about them on Bay Ridge Families and you’ll get to try a free One Week Trial Experience which includes one private lesson and one group class. Head over to Natalia Huang Piano Studio to see more of what they offer.
