I'd been dying to go to a BYOB paint party for ages now, but with 5 straight years of either being pregnant or breastfeeding, the timing just wasn't right... until now! I decided to organize my own event for two reasons: 1) so I could choose the best day, time, and design for myself, and 2) so I could make it private for my local Bay Ridge Mamas!! There are a few art studios within the Greater Bay Ridge area, but I chose Art Fun Studio at 5th Ave and 92nd Street because the owner, Alla, had recently reached out with interest in advertising with my other brand, Bay Ridge Families. So I thought, hey, two birds one stone - how perfect! And spoiler alert, the studio, the event, and the staff were all ah-may-zing!! We had the best time!!! But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start from the beginning - I'll walk you through the Art Fun Studio Sip and Paint Party experience!! You can choose from one of their upcoming Sip and Paint events (the day/time/painting are pre-set) or organize your own as I did (choose day, time, and design from her gallery of paintings). The price is usually around $35 and includes all materials for painting (canvas, acrylics, apron), a great selection of music via Spotify, and even glasses if you need (they'll uncork for you, as well!!). You just bring yourself, and any booze or finger foods you like. Just know you won't have a whole lot of space at your disposal with the canvas, paint brushes, and palette taking up most space in front of you. Most of us kept our wine bottles at our feet with a glass up behind our easels. I chose a very abstract Brooklyn Bridge painting, which apparently was one of her most difficult (oops!!). We were pleased to arrive and see the bridge and buildings had already been outlined in ink for us, though were overwhelmed seeing the original and couldn't comprehend how we were actually going to accomplish that! But no matter how daunting the task, Alla was simply remarkable at breaking it down, step by step, going over in detail what to paint in what color, which brush to use, when to clean and dry brushes, how to mix colors to create new ones, direction and thickness of strokes, etc etc. When they say "no experience necessary" it's completely true!! When she caught wary faces, she reassured us that we were doing an amazing job. She was so sweet and energetic, we all fell quickly in love with her!!! They do children's events as well, and I get the feeling that the kids must love her, too! While Alla walked us through and demonstrated step by step, Eugene walked around (very carefully, never knocking into a painting, an arm, or bottle of wine - I'll never know how!!) re-stocking paint on palettes and taking TONS of pictures. That's right, they snap photos throughout the event and have them up on their Facebook page for you the next day!! It's a great bonus!! Our event ran a whopping 4 hours! Ha! We all gathered for a group shot before parting ways with our beautiful pieces of art - all similar but each unique with our own individual touches, mistakes, and expressions! It was such a cool experience, I really can't wait to do it again!! Art Fun Studio hosts classes and events for all ages, from toddler birthday parties ($160 for 6 kids) to school field trips (they're on the NYC DOE bidders list), to walk-in art projects of plaster, ceramic, or pre-traced canvas (from $15 with no sitting fee). The owner, Alla, is truly amazing, and they'll work with you to customize any event!! Contact her via email or telephone (718-680-0508) with any questions and tell her I sent ya! Have you done a BYOB Paint Party or or another art-based party before?? Share your experience below!!! This review was sponsored by Art Fun Studio, however all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I just got introduced to a great app that monitors numerous aspects of your daily life, and for a small fee will give you major insight into your genetic strengths and weaknesses through the raw data from your 23andMe or Ancestry DNA reports! This app is called Rthm The Life App and it's really cool, if you have an iPhone that is... unfortunately the Android version does not have all the cool features just yet (but stay tuned, they're working on it). Check out my video below where I do a live reading of my genetic results - surprising, funny, and slightly worrisome things like sensitivity to stress, cardiac risk, sweet tooth, body odor sensitivity and dairy tolerance!! I also walk you through some of the other features, but I'll go into these here on the blog as well. Even if you haven't done your DNA testing yet (what rock are you living under haha!!), the app still offers tons of helpful features. Here are a few examples:
Now, if you have done your 23andMe or Ancestry DNA testing, you can pay $10 to download the raw data into the app for the riDNA function to analyze 41 genetic traits related to skin, metabolism, nutrition, and more. It'll give you your specific genetic variant for each trait, what it means for your health or life, and ways in which you can improve yourself based on your variant. The app will then start sending you daily tips based on your genetics and trends for activity level, sleep, etc. Many of the traits it analyzed were way beyond me, like seriously, what the heck is Catecholamine and Choline!? It gives explanations, but some were so far over my head that they weren't really of interest to me. Others were pretty obvious, like sun sensitivity. Come on, I'm 35 and have had countless sunburns, and thanks to 23andMe (see my and my husband's 23andMe unboxing and results here) I now know I'm 95% Northwestern European, so yeah, I know I'm sensitive to sunlight haha! Some were kind of crazy, like how could they possibly gleam this info from my DNA!??! For example, sweet tooth, stress reactivity, reward response, and hostility! And some gave me really fascinating insight into my genetics, like microbial immunity, cognitive benefit of caffeine, and circadian rhythm. Overall, really fun reading through them all and learning more about myself! I'm totally bummed that they don't have the Android version fully functioning yet, as I couldn't give the app a good test and review since I only have an Android!! I was able to borrow my husband's iPhone for a few hours to upload my 23andMe raw data to his phone and read through my results live from his phone, and was able to play around a bit with the app, but I wasn't able to use it over a few days to see how it really does with tracking my activity and sleep, sending tips, etc. So, while I can't give you my personal experience there, it does look like it would be really helpful and fun! I'm looking forward to them unleashing the full version for Android, for sure!! If Rthm sounds cool to you, get more info and download the app from their website! The app itself is free, it costs $10 to upload your 23andMe or Ancestry DNA report raw data, and they also have a premium subscription plan called Rthm Blue, that tracks your circadian rhythm to generate a unique Body Clock Score (optimal meal times, exercise times, work times, etc.), and your overall heart and nervous system health. So, what do you think? Cool? Helpful? Overrated? Dangerous? Leave your thoughts in a comment below!! When our twins started climbing out of their cribs at 19 months, we were terrified. Terrified they would fall while climbing out half asleep, terrified that they would get into trouble in their room or elsewhere in the house in the middle of the night, and terrified that none of us would be sleeping ever again. We immediately converted their beds to toddler beds, and bye bye went their beautiful naps and stress-free bed time. Bye bye went sleeping through the night. Bye bye went having my bed for just me and my husband. The next 2 months were tough, to say the least. We quite often ended up co-sleeping with the twins and our older son (who shares a room with the twins). In that situation I can't sleep well because someone is always kicking me, and I'm scared one of the kids will fall out of bed, not to mention the girls don't sleep well together - one will wake and be pissed the other is next to mommy and bite her and then they're both up screaming! Sigh.
I'd been venting on Facebook and one of my friends recommended a crib tent by Aussie Cot Net Co that saved her sanity - it had been recommended to her by a sleep consultant who basically told her that children this young just don't have the will-power to stay in bed.
I mean, it makes sense. There's a reason they make seat belts for high chairs and strollers. Do you really expect a 1 or 2 year old to stay in one spot when the world is calling to them to come and explore, or all they want is to cuddle up with mommy? Nope. And as far as laying down the law with rules and rewards and consequences, yeah, not so much working with my wee ones just yet. I watched many Super Nanny clips to no avail. I was in their room for 90 minutes each night putting them back in their beds, as soon as one was in, the other would jump out. If I left the room to end the "game", they would climb up to the windowsill and started jumping around and banging on the glass, or they would bang on the doors and scream, or start opening and slamming shut the kitchen door (and our downstairs neighbor would break out her broomstick and start banging on her ceiling). It wasn't safe and I was seriously at a breaking point (as were our neighbors, yay city living...) Suffice it to say I reached out to get two of those crib tents for review ASAP! Our "Baby Crib Safety Nets" (also called Crib Popup Safety Net) came the next day, I reinstalled the 4th crib rail on both cribs, and installed the crib tents (the latter of which took all of 5 minutes for both cribs - it's SO EASY!) - just watch my demo below to see me unbox the tents and give a demo of how they work!!
The zippers are stiff so they're not easy for little kids to work, plus they can be pulled to either the inside or outside and completely shut, so their little fingers can't reach the zipper or poke a finger through to pull it down. The tent is made from a tight-woven mesh that is breathable and see through, and the wire frame literally pop right back up if you pull them down, so there really doesn't seem a way for them to come down on the child to entrap them. The carry-case gives instructions on how to twist the tent back into a flat circle for easy storage and travel (they also make a version specifically for mini cribs and pack 'n plays if you prefer traveling with that).
There are two ties for each corner of the crib, made of thick mesh fabric. The crib tent fits snugly down under the corners and sides of the mattress (the material is satin down by the mattress), but does not go all the way across the bottom, so if you needed to you could untie the corners and yank it up and off from above without removing the mattress from the crib. More likely you would be utilizing one of the two windows to get your child in and out, and pulling out the mattress for changing sheets. Though, if you don't already know about QuickZip, these sheets are amazing and even more helpful if you are using a crib tent or bunk beds - you just zip off the top of the sheet and don't have to take the mattress out to change the fitted sheet!! (See my QuickZip review here!).
The Baby Crib Safety Net meets all US Consumer Product Safety Commission baby product requirements, however I would recommend carefully checking your crib tent daily for any tears in the mesh, because a child could possibly get caught in a hole if they managed to make one. There have been several other kinds of crib tents that have been recalled due to injury or death of children, so, be reminded it's not advised to put anything in the crib, even a bumper, pillow, or crib tent, and choosing to do so should not to be taken lightly. Also, it should be noted many of the other "hacks" parents try to keep their toddlers in the crib longer have risks as well, for example, when wearing a sleep sack or pajamas that have been altered to make climbing harder, a child is more likely to fall head first if they manage to get over the rail. Yikes!
All that said, you do what you gotta do and what you feel is best for your children and family as a whole. You feel me?
So, how has it been going for us using the crib tents? We've used them for the past 3 nights and each night has been better than the last!! The first night, our twins laid down and went to sleep in the tents without a whimper, but they were up screaming at midnight and I brought them to my bed. The second night one of the girls screamed for about 10 minutes before laying down, but she slept through the night! Her sister woke around midnight and I brought her to bed. But last night, one of the girls whined for 5 minutes at bedtime and woke crying at midnight (but I was able to sooth her and put her back down into her bed quietly) and they both slept in their beds til 6:30AM (10.5 hours)!!! Ah-may-zing!!
So, the crib tents seem to be working to help the girls realize they need to stay in their beds to sleep, and that nighttime is not the time for exploring or cuddling with mama. We talk about how everyone sleeps best in their own comfy bed, with their own pillows and stuffed animals and no one bumping into them. We talk about how they can cuddle with their baby dolls and have a sip of water if they wake up. Of course, they're not even 2 years old and talking about this alone just doesn't cut it. But together with the crib tents, we may be on to something. I really really hope these crib tents are the solution I'm counting on them being!! There are also a couple of other reasons you may want to try out a crib tent: 1) they can keep pets out of your child's bed, 2) keep bugs out of your child's bed, and 2) protect a newborn baby from an older sibling (for example, a toddler who wants to "take care" of his little sister - you can flip the zippers to be inside the tent, and a toddler won't be able to open it from the outside). You can find the Baby Crib Safety Net for sale on their website, and the owner warned there are some knockoffs on Amazon with paid reviews - these knockoff crib tents have not undergone the scrutiny of testing and she warns they may be using inferior materials and design, so be careful!! Because many of you reading this review are having trouble with your child's sleep, I want to give a shoutout to my friend and AMAZING sleep consultant, Achieve with Carolina!! She has helpful (free!!) Facebook chats and seminars here in NYC, and offers fee-based consulting over the phone or in person. She doesn't believe in a "quick fix" but rather to look at the whole child and family - including the sleeping environment, sleep routine, and even the child's diet!
Have you encountered any sleep troubles with your baby or toddler? Have you used the help of a sleep consultant or any sleep aids? I'd love to hear from you - leave a comment below!!

When I heard about a teeny tiny booster seat that could easily be stored in the glove compartment or a backpack, I was intrigued, to say the least! See, we are a carless family of 5 living in a 950 square foot NYC apartment (see my home tour on YouTube) with no storage space to spare for bulky items we use very rarely... like your average booster seats! Measuring in at a miniscule 10"x5" and 1.6 pounds, the mifold Grab-and-Go Booster seat sounded like a dream, but I had to see it to believe it! Being the Mom Blogger I am, I reached out and got one to review, and spoiler alert, it's awesome!!!
Standard bulky booster seats raise your child up so that the seatbelt fits them correctly. Now prepare to have your mind blown. The flat, compact, and portable mifold Grab-and-Go booster seat does the opposite - it brings the seatbelt down to your child to fit them correctly: on the shoulder (off the delicate neck and face) and on the hip bones and tops of thighs (off of the stomach and internal organs). Basically, the child sits on the flat base (which is comfy with slight foam padding and anti-slip grips) and the booster has 3 slots for the seatbelt to hook into - one to the side of each hip (adjustable widths) and one clip on an adjustable tether that pulls the shoulder belt down to their shoulder.
Unlike some of the other car seats and travel vests we've tried, this one seems to be pretty much fool proof. After a quick viewing of their demo video (in which a young girl straps herself in) and reading the short instruction manual, we took it to a friend's car and got it set up quickly on the first try, with zero frustration. I gotta tell you, that's a first for me! Don't miss our awesome demo video here:
It's so tiny, easy to use, and budget-friendly, I feel like every child ages 4 - 12 should have one. Seriously. When traveling, car pooling, taking a taxi, or even as the child's regular daily booster! What's more? It's a great option for sitting 3 kids across in pretty much any car, and is also great for kids who don't want to feel "babyish" next to older siblings or friends.
The mifold booster is only recommended for children at least 4 years and 40 pounds (until 12 years or 100 pounds), however it should be noted that the CDC recommends children use a forward facing car seat (with 5-point harness) until 5 years or when reaching the upper limit of that seat. I also want to throw it out there that the mifold booster car seat conforms to the most universally accepted global booster car seat regulations including European Union ECE R44.4, FMVSS 213 in the United States, and the RSSR regulations in Canada. Click here for more regulatory details.
You can buy the mifold Grab-and-Go Booster Seat, in a rainbow of colors, for around $45, on Amazon (affiliate link), BuyBuy Baby, and Nordstrom. And you can also win one in my $300 value jackpot Back to School Goodies Giveaway running through July 26!!!

That's right - beloved children's musician Laurie Berkner is about to release "The Dance Remixes" featuring 14 of her best-selling songs remixed into Electronic Dance Music (EDM) style! HOW FUN!?!?! I got a digital download for purpose of review and oh my gosh, we are LOVING IT!! All 3 of my children (myself included) are huge fans of Laurie Berkner. We often have her YouTube channel on in the background while playing in the living room, giving us the chance to quickly jump up and distract them with some dancing if they start fighting over a toy! So, we found it really exciting to hear the new versions, overflowing with energy. You are literally compelled to get up and dance your sillies out! I think the strong beats have the added benefit of helping young children learn about music and how to keep the beat! Add to that how popular Electronic Dance Music is with preschoolers, toddlers, and parents, it's sure to be a hit!
Engineered by three-time GRAMMY winner Dave Darlington, Laurie Berkner: The Dance Remixes keeps mixing it up, featuring a variety of EDM styles, even a Latin-flavored one ("I'm Gonna Catch You")! To give back to the community, Jose spent time volunteering as a mentor, tutor and teacher’s aide. In his essay, he spoke of overcoming difficult situations involving domestic violence and time in shelters with his mother. He credited his perseverance and support of caring NYC teachers for his great success in school, which resulted in his acceptance at Columbia University.
